Technology giant, Sony, just announced the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for Smartphone cameras. The company made this known in a news release July 23, 2018.

The new sensor is said to feature 48 effective megapixels, the highest phone camera pixel count so far. According to Sony, “the new product achieved a world first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8µm, making it possible to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a ½ -type (8.0mm diagonal) unit, thereby supporting enhanced imaging on Smartphone cameras”, the company said.

With this top-level feature, the sensor rivals high-performance SLR cameras, making it possible to capture beautiful, high-resolution images even with a Smartphone.

Shipment of the sensor is expected to start in September. Sony has not mentioned the first phone maker that will have the sensor on its Smartphone yet. But such a phone will certainly be a great phone to have.
